What is Scripturial?

Scripturial takes a different approach to learning Biblical Greek. The focus of Scripturial is to provide a large amount of simple comprehensible input. What does this mean? After beginning to learn the alphabet, you move straight into simple comprehensible sentences. New words and ideas are taught through listening and reading practice.

The primary goal of this app is to provide comprehensible input that is easy for the reader to consume without too much difficulty. New words are introduced using a good amount of practice sentences. Where possible, practice sentences are preceded with picture cards to refresh our memory of older words. The goal of the pictures is always to make the following sentences easier to consume. People have different learning speeds, we know that some people will feel like the content is too easy or repetitive, whereas others may feel like the content is too hard. The goal is to err towards the side of “too easy” rather than “too hard.” As more users engage in the content, we will be able to analyze and adjust the difficulty level of each lesson.

Where possible, Scripturial will present a grammatical idea through direct reading practice. Only when necessary, will an English explanation be presented. Grammar explanations may appear at crucial points to prevent confusion, or sometimes to speed up the learning process. For example: At the start, Scripturial presents sentences with word orders valid in both English and in Biblical Greek. Words are practiced in the context of real sentences right from the start. The initial hurdle of memorizing noun endings is slightly delayed. Over time, different word endings and word orders appear, accompanied by simple explanations. What does this mean in practice? The first three units use the Subject-Verb-Object order that English speakers are quite at home using. Alternate word orderings begin to appear from unit 4 onwards.

The goal of Scripturial is to provide an app that can be used by anyone who has a phone and a few spare minutes per day to actively practice Koine Greek. People who complete the app, and people who enjoy the detail of grammatical explanations will find it helpful to supplement their study with a Biblical Greek textbook.
